Winemaking Notes
We have made this wine for several vintages, however, this is our first release of Blaufrankisch bottled it on its own. Pronounced “Blahw-frahn-keesh”. Blaufränkisch is a grape variety that is known in other areas in the world as other names, including Lemberger. We decided to keep it Blaufränkisch. It is a grape variety that really appeals to everybody who likes red wines. It has the attributes of a lighter wine that is really expressive and it has great acidity but it also has some attributes of fuller bodied wines that are rich and really filled with fruit.
There’s not much of it planted in Niagara. It is a bit of an obscure variety here and in most areas of the world which is why most people haven’t heard of it. The small plantings that are here in Niagara do really well and normally we use it as a blending grape variety but, for 2020 it was such a fabulous vintage that we decided to bottle just a couple barrels of this on its own.
We aged it in an older oak barrels so there’s really not a whole lot of oak influence on the nose but then on the palate the barrel helps to soften out the tannins. It was aged in barrel for just over a year and is drinking really well right now. It has a good backbone of acidity and just a nice medium bodied red wine.
