On a whim, I met Theo in 2011 in his vineyard high atop the Escarpment, a stunning location for cool-climate grape varieties that thrive in Niagara. I was blown away by the amount of hard work he and his family had put into their vineyard. I’ve come to know that every vintage, the vineyard is meticulously hand-tended to by the Procyshyn family, true stewards of the land.
The 2016 harvest from Theo’s Block was limited in quantity but, as always, provided us the highest quality fruit. Like previous harvests from the Procyshyn Vineyard, the fruit reflected two things: the nature of where it was grown, and the dedicated family who farms the vines that grow there.
As with most vintages, Theo’s Block Riesling stood out amongst our favourite wines soon after the harvest was complete. Following up our immensely popular 2015 vintage, we bottled the 2016 wine on its own and have waited patiently for the right time to make it available once again.
I think that harvest is the perfect time to share this wine. as the colours change and days get cooler, there’s never a busier time in the vineyards and winery. This wine has tremendous depth of flavour, balance and extract–but I hope that you can also see the wine as I do–a tribute to Theo, and as a thank you to his family.
